Instructions for Initial Conditions
Drift Station Gallery, Lincoln, Nebraska (USA) 5-29 November 2010
The “initial condition” is a term used in Chaos Theory referring to a simple starting point that, when the system is set into motion, is radically transformed into an unpredictable result. Artists were asked to send works describing an initial condition by which an artwork can be made or enacted, taking on the form of instructions that would be exhibited as artworks in and of themselves. They would run across traditions and disciplines: some acting as a catalyst for acts meant to be carried out immediately, while others, purely poetic, would call for no action, or would be conceptual or impossible to be realized and could only be completed mentally.
